CAFÉS RICHARD - The French art of coffee
Discovered in a small café during a holiday in Paris and thrilled immediately. At the time, we had no idea that we had one of the best roasting companies in our range in our cup. Only when we took a closer look at the company "Cafés Richard" did we understand - we can't withhold this from our espresso customers. With its history, tradition, great and exceptional coffee, Cafés Richard is all the things we appreciate in a good roastery.
Cafés Richard and its history
The history of Cafés Richard began over 130 years ago. In 1892, the famous Maison Richard was founded by Auguste and Pierre Fayel. Their cousin, Henri Richard, bought the company a little later and, together with his son André, transformed it from a wine trade into a pure coffee roasting company. This was the beginning of a wonderful relationship between the Richards and the art of coffee roasting.
The family spent many decades constantly creating new creations and reinventing themselves, which can be seen in the design changes and many new coffees. The special thing about it - the company has remained in family hands until today.
The accuracy in roasting and the very personal and close cooperation with their coffee farmers all over the world made Cafés Richard so successful.
France's top roasters
In 1976, the roastery settled in Gennevilliers, a Parisian suburb. The company still operates from here today. Since then, Cafés Richard has grown steadily and established itself as France's top roaster by the 1990s. Today, Richards is France's largest roaster in the HORECA sector, employing 450 people worldwide and supplying over 40,000 major customers around the world.
However, despite these quantities, the quality of the coffee and the interaction with the producers is not neglected. This is one of the main reasons why we can include Cafés Richard in our range with a clear conscience. Many of the products are 100% Fairtrade and organic, such as the fruity Honduras ESE pods. Furthermore, Cafés Richards has a very open and transparent way of working and gives its customers all the information about the production and processing of its products. Especially in the world of coffee, this is not a matter of course. For the many different coffee creations, only the very best premium beans are considered by the roasting masters at Richards.
100% Fairtrade and Organic?!
The coffee is roasted in two different ways. The well-known Florio espresso, for example, is refined according to the Italian roasting style. Long and gentle roasting, which makes the beans dark, aromatic and intense. Due to the longer roasting at a lower temperature, the beans do not become bitter.
The second roasting style is the French roast. Unlike an Italian or especially Southern Italian roast, the French espresso is roasted a little shorter and at a lower temperature.
Don't get us wrong, though - the French roast style still counts as a dark roast, along with the Viennese and Italian espresso roasts.
The refining process removes most of the acids from the beans and they gain body and roasted aromas. Just not quite as intense as a southern Italian espresso. However, this also has advantages. With the French roast, the lower heat means that no unpleasant bitter substances form at all. Instead, it contains more natural coffee aromas and fruity notes.
We are really happy to have found this gem of a roaster and to have included it in our range. We would like to convince you of the incomparable variety and quality of Cafés Richard.
