Julius Meinl - Coffee since 1862
Julius Meinl Kaffee & Espresso Vienna holds a rich culinary tradition, deeply connected to the city along the Danube since 1862.
Julius Meinl Coffee - A Success Story
Today, Julius Meinl is an internationally successful Austrian family business, representing the culture of Viennese coffee for over 160 years.
Julius Meinl - Between Elegant Viennese Coffee and Italian Espresso Tradition
Julius Meinl embodies the elegance of Viennese coffee culture and the Italian espresso tradition. With its refined and diverse coffee blends, the roastery is represented in over 70 countries, offering high-quality coffee inspired by the finesse and delicacy of traditional Viennese cafés. Declared a UNESCO cultural heritage in 2011, Viennese coffee culture isn’t only about unique coffee preparation methods but also reflects a vibrant cultural, artistic, and social scene.
The globally recognized logo is a mark of excellence, ideal for Viennese specialties like the "Melange" (espresso with equal parts hot milk and milk foam) or a "Kleiner Brauner" (espresso with cream). All varieties share a common thread of careful selection and meticulous treatment of raw materials.
The proximity to Italy has also influenced Julius Meinl’s coffee culture. Espresso and cappuccino gained popularity, and Julius Meinl embraced this trend with Italian-inspired roasts, which have become an integral part of its product range.
Julius Meinl - A Pioneer of Coffee
It all started with a unique idea. Before 1862, only raw or green coffee beans were sold, which Viennese households would roast at home. This often led to poor results, with the luxury beans turning burnt and inedible. Julius Meinl developed a new method to delicately roast green coffee beans, achieving consistently high quality, and opened Vienna’s first shop selling expertly roasted beans.
It was during this period that the iconic logo was created, which was redesigned in 2004 by the renowned designer Matteo Thun, representing the family’s fifth generation. It’s fascinating to see how this traditional brand has evolved over time and adapted to contemporary tastes.
Today, the company remains under the guidance of the Meinl family’s fifth generation. Julius Meinl continues to be a symbol of Viennese coffee culture, blending tradition with innovation, and is celebrated worldwide.
Meinl's Quality Standards
Sustainability is central to Julius Meinl’s operations. The "Responsibly Selected Coffee" program focuses on responsible sourcing and purchasing practices. By 2025, every cup of Julius Meinl coffee aims to be produced responsibly.
Under the careful oversight of coffee experts, the precious beans undergo numerous tests at every production stage.
Julius Meinl’s blends are high-quality products, where the intensity of the roasting process plays a key role: light roasts for filter coffee, medium for traditional Viennese coffee, and dark for espresso.
Meinl Coffee for Everyone
Julius Meinl offers a wide range of coffee beans, ground coffee, and 100% compostable capsules to cater to all preferences, from the most demanding professionals who enjoy grinding on-site to those seeking a convenient, high-quality coffee experience.
The "Wiener" (Viennese) blends are selected and packaged according to Viennese coffee standards, such as the "Caffè Crema Wiener Art."
Julius Meinl is particularly proud of its Vienna line, crafted for enjoying high-quality coffee at home. Viennese roasting and blends cater to the growing demand for products that sit between the light roasting style of Northern Europe, with its high acidity, and the dark roasting of Southern Europe, resulting in a more bitter taste. The outcome is a hazelnut-colored bean with a chocolatey flavor and mild acidity. Mixing tradition and innovation, the Vienna line offers a selection of finely balanced, carefully roasted premium coffees.
The Vast World of Julius Meinl
As we’ve seen, Julius Meinl is a coffee rich in nuances and unique qualities. We’ve only touched the surface, as the choice of blends and coffee beans is vast. Meinl coffees are delicately and precisely roasted, standing out for their incredible variety of flavors. Each blend and bean selection, though distinct, shares a commitment to delivering quality coffee inspired by a rich history of love, innovation, and passion, making it one of Europe’s most elegant, sophisticated, and delightful coffees: Viennese coffee.
It’s no coincidence that Julius Meinl has been an ambassador of Viennese coffee culture since 1862.
Coffee aficionados appreciate Julius Meinl as each cup evokes the legendary Viennese cafés’ tradition.
